The microfinance institution Pro Mujer, Programas para la Mujer (Pro Mujer) is an experienced and recognized microfinance NGO with more than 23 years of operations in the nine departments of Bolivia. It currently offers financial services to low-income, self-employed women in rural and semi-urban areas of Bolivia without access to commercial banking, mainly through village banking technology. Fundación Pro Mujer is coordinated by Pro Mujer International, a US-based non-governmental organization (NGO).
Pro Mujer was created in 1990 as a non-profit NGO and belongs to the Pro Mujer International network. In November 2013, Pro Mujer become a regulated Development Finance Institution by the Supervisory Authority of Financial Systems, but cannot take deposits from the public. Pro Mujer is one of the MFIs with the largest national coverage. There is also a separate Pro Mujer NGO, which offers non-financial services to vulnerable groups in Bolivia, aiming to improve their productivity and self-esteem and providing them with health programmes related to nutrition, preventive medicine, family planning etc.
