Supporting small cocoa and cashew nut farmers in Côte d'Ivoire
Fair tradeTrade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.
Allah Bekele de Fresco (CABF) procures, processes, stores, transports and exports cocoa and cashew nuts produced by its members. It also offers its members other services such as technical assistance, training and pre-purchase financing.
The cooperative was founded in 2004 to fight rural poverty among small cocoa farmers and prevent urban migration by allowing farmers to join forces and improve incomes and living conditions. The objective was to create an effective organization able to give farmers a greater share of crop profits.
The cooperative started off with 350 members, but this number has gradually grown to almost 3,000 small cocoa and cashew nut farmers in Fresco, Dabakala, Boniérédougou and Katiola (2016). All farmers are direct owners of CABF and together they form a strong network that can benefit from technical, social and community assistance.
CABF is Fair Trade, UTZ and Rainforest Alliance certified and has an annual production capacity of around 3,500 tons of cocoa and 5,000 tons of cashew nuts. The cooperative has a very strong social impact on communities as it works with farmers in some of the poorest areas in Southern and Northern Côte d'Ivoire.
Allah Bekele de Fresco has been an Oikocredit partner since 2016.Download this project as a PDF
