Punam Energy Private Limited - Providing power to rural communities in India

Punam Energy Private Limited

Providing power to rural communities in India

Promotes and/or supports the protection of the environment. An example of this is an organic farming cooperative.

Punam Energy Private Limited (PEPL) is a social enterprise established in 2009 and based in  Kolkata. It is the commercial offshoot of the NGO SwitchON. SwitchOn is a community-based organization that aims to increase access to sustainable livelihood opportunities for underserved populations through advocacy, capacity building and supporting innovation.

PEPL provides decentralized energy solutions to underserved households and institutions with a range of solar products and solutions such as solar lanterns, solar home systems, solar water heating systems, solar inverters, solar street lighting, cooking stoves, KW installations for households and institutions, solar TV, solar computers, solar micro grids and solar irrigation systems. All products are marketed under the brand name ONergy. To date, PEPL has impacted over 250,000 lives in rural India through the provision of such products.

PEPL has set up a unique full service distribution infrastructure by establishing Renewable Energy Centres (RECs) which connect technology, finance and grassroots organizations to cater to the needs and aspirations of their beneficiaries. The RECs operate through a network of trained rural entrepreneurs and leveraging the existing networks of local NGOs, SHGs and MFIs. RECs manage the entire distribution process providing awareness, training, servicing and financing options to the beneficiaries – which was the missing link in the rural market.

PEPL will use Oikocredit financing as working capital to expand its activities in rural India and provide power to more local communities living off the grid.

Punam Energy Private Limited (PEPL) has been an Oikocredit partner since 2016.
