Fair tradeTrade in products that have been certified and carry a fair trade label. An example of this is a farmer’s cooperative that collectively sells its cocoa to a fair trade organization.
GreenPromotes and/or supports the protection of the environment. An example of this is an organic farming cooperative.
Unión de Organizaciones Campesinas Cacaoteras del Ecuador (Unocace) is a cooperative of cocoa-producer associations and farmers based in south-west Ecuador. Established in 1999, Unocace first partnered with Oikocredit in 2013.
Among its goals, Unocace seeks to improve the lives of the region’s disadvantaged small-scale cocoa producers (average farm size two hectares) by providing them with technical training to boost their crops, as well as pre-export finance.
The cooperative markets and exports the cocoa which its farmer-members produce according to high environmental and social standards.
The farmer-members benefit by receiving better prices, distribution of profits, training and access to local and International markets.Download this project as a PDF
