Supporting cattle farming and agriculture across Uruguay

Uruguay

Cooperativa Agraria Nacional (COPAGRAN) is an agricultural and cattle multi-business cooperative that provides services to farmers across Uruguay.

Around 3,267 farmers work through COPAGRAN. Of this number 1,267 are Uruguayan cooperative farmers (approximately one third of which are women) while the remaining 2,000 farmers are non-members.

COPAGRAN is one of Uruguay’s leading agricultural cooperatives. Rooted in a traditional agricultural cooperative system, it is an efficient and modern organization with its grassroots traditions defined as a core value.

COPAGRAN mainly operates across the River Uruguay where some of the most fertile land is located. From its head office in Montevideo it manages a number of regional offices, which, in turn, coordinate a network of local offices. In addition to offering silos, cattle rations and biodiesel it also manages general stores supplying farmers. Thanks to its geographical coverage the cooperative is deeply rooted in one of the most agricultural areas of the country.

In line with its own strategic focus on sustainable small-scale agriculture, Oikocredit strongly supports COPAGRAN's solidarity with small farmers who are threatened by large international companies taking over vast parts of land in Uruguay in an attempt to push them out of business.

COPAGRAN has been an Oikocredit partner since 1998.
