The nursery contains 500,000 coffee plants which are managed by José Estevez (aged 25). José is helping the producers to revive their plantations, following the devastation brought about by coffee leaf rust. The new plants are the same variety, yet stronger and more resistant to the disease.
The nursery offers 18 different kinds of arabica varieties, and gives the seedlings to the producers as a form of long-term credit. The plants are brought to the producers if they lack access to transportation. To promote crop diversification among its members, COCAFCAL also offers ornamental trees (providing shade to coffee plants) and fruit trees in the nursery.
